My daughter's mini collection

When I was a child, I’ve always dreamed of having my own book shelf and my own “set” of encyclopedia. But since our budget that time was very limited, my mom wasn’t able to fulfill that "dream" for me. Mababaw na kung sa mababaw, (haha), but I have so much passion in reading that’s why I treat every book with so much love.

I remember encyclopedia those days were so heavy and thick but since I never had to chance to own one, my only resort to researching stuff are my text books. I always got worried during my elementary and high school days most especially if we have to research something because my resources that time were very limited. (That’s why kids nowadays are so lucky because research is just one click away). To be honest, I even envied my classmates who used to bring those thick educational books at schools because I’ve always wanted to own one. I can still remember that I used to rent pocketbooks so I can update myself with the latest stories of Sweet Valley Kids and Goosebumps. :D

And so I promised myself that as soon as I get my own job, I will buy any books that I want. No more rentals, no more getting envious. J

Fast forward to present -  Now that I have my own job,  I am able to buy any books that I like, but ever since the dawn of Internet and e-readers, I only read books thru e-books. (but no e-book can ever replace the happiness it gives me every time I read a story from a “real Book”. The smell of books give me so much joy. ahhh!

I also want my daughter to have the passion in reading. I know every mom would love it if their child grows up to be a book worm and smart. And if we want our kids to be smart, they need to embrace and acquire a love for reading. That’s why as early as now, my daughter and I are taking our baby steps to read books together. i am showering her with so many books and I want her to know the importance of reading a book.

I’ve already started working on her mini-library, and I hope when she grows up, she would appreciate and love reading as much as I do.

Here is a good article regarding the benefits of reading a book to your child:

  2. I remember those encyclopedias, and it's still here in our house. I wonder if my daughter will appreciate that when these days, sabi mo nga, everything is a click away for them. I also buy books for my daughter, mostly board books para di nya mapunit yung pages. I want to complete the Dr. Seuss books.

  3. Just like you, nothing can ever replace the smell of real and tangible paperbacks. I used to think I was some weirdo for liking it. Now I know I'm not alone. hahaha...Your blog post entry reminds me of the precious book collections I've lost during Ondoy. Now, just like you, I only read e-books, though at times I miss the real ones. Kudos for introducing your child to reading this early.

  5. That's our ongoing family project - building a mini-library for our son. We just put his books in differentcorners of our house so he can get one whenever he feels like reading. We have a table for Filipino storybooks, a corner for books about trains and fire trucks. Sarap ng maraming books. Challenging lang ang pag-aayos! Good job, Mommy!

  6. I will always prefer reading actual books! I loved Sweet Valley and Nancy Drew when I was younger. Now, I enjoy reading the novels of John Green, Paulo Coehlo and Mitch Albom. I hope that my son will continue to love reading just like his parents (instead of watching TV and playing gadgets - times have changed). Nothing compares to the knowledge you gain from reading :)

  8. This is a very nice practice Mommy A. I encourage my kids to read books too as in yung hardbound at hindi e-books. Iba pa din tlaga pag totoong libro. Para sa kanila din yang ginagawa natin. :)

  9. oh, Sweet Valley High! it reminds me of my High school days! I am so lucky that our school library has lots of it, and so with Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew! I'm into Baby Sitters Club too, which I get to borrow from a close friend. Wish I can still have that same luxury of time to read! :) and just like you sissy, I'm trying to pass this hobby cum passion to my children, but I must admit that the gadgets these days are getting on the way. :(

  10. We were one of the lucky few who had encyclopedia at home. My mom got it on installment since they were so costly. Yearly there would be updated issues covering issues and stories from the previous years. But i would not carry them to class. They were so heavy. I do have classmates though and cousins who would come over to do research. I think those books groomed me and my siblings to crave and love of knowledge. I try to do the same at home with my own children. They love book stores and can get lost for hours checking out books from shelves. They have their own library too but i don't keep outdated and outgrown books. I give them away to public schools. My boys are only allowed a bookshelf each to avoid cluttering and keep their stuffs organized.

  11. When I was young and didn't have money, books were not a problem; I just regularly went to Book Sale! Hehe. One of the first things I did for my son actually was build a library. Try buying your daughter the classic books din.

  16. I wish I hadn't donated our old encyclopedias. I'm sure they're now considered antiques since no one prints those heavy books anymore! I always just console myself by thinking it went to a good cause. Good job on imparting the love for reading to your kid.

  17. A good book on your hand is very nostalgic. Honestly, as much as I like reading online having the physical books handy is still the best. Kids will truly appreciate having books around them. It's a multi-sensory experience.-Macy

  20. My son loved books and at 3 he can read on his own. I believe that as long as you model what you want your child to be, it's possible!
