Tot time with my daughter

My Milly is turning 1 year old in few weeks’ time which means we’re close to starting our informal home schooling! (yay for me) I refer informal homeschooling as Tot School Time. According to 1plus1plus1equals1 website, Tot school is the idea of learning through play at home during younger years. This is where we provide materials and prepare age appropriate activities that are exciting and appealing to them. You can choose makeshift toys, materials you already have in your home and any activities that you think that your children would love. With that, we can expose them to learning a lot of things even at an early age.

As early as 6 months, I started exposing different types of age appropriate activities to my daughter. After my work, I always make sure to play and read some of her books as she sits on my lap. While some parents are against letting their kids watch iPad, I allow Milly to have her own screen time for about 15 minutes per day. (no to fast paced cartoons; I just let her watch Baby Einstein and some educational videos).

That’s actually the reason why I think homeschooling works with my schedule. I firmly believe that as long as you manage your time properly and have a schedule; homeschooling is possible even if you’re working full time.  The maximum number of hours per day you need to allot to toddlers & preschoolers is 2 hours so that wouldn't be a problem for me. It's actually an advantage for me that I work at night, because I get to play with her, feed and bathe her, sing nursery rhymes, cuddle and do our tot time together. This is now a part of our daily routine and we usually start our play/learn time before she takes her morning nap. One hour before her nap and one hour after she takes her lunch. I actually do not mind how many hours of sleep I get each day, but to give you an idea of my day to day time allotment for my daughter, I only sleep 2-3 hours per day. :) It may sound tiring for a full time working mom, but I'm telling you, it is really fulfilling to see how my daughter learns and appreciates the time I always give her.

Here are our typical daytime activities:

Sing ABC's and some nursery rhymes. Read aloud books.
Play time with wooden Numbers.

Letting her roam around the room

Story telling as she starts to fall asleep :)
I remember when I was a kid, I've always loved playing teacher-teacheran. Actually, I wanted to be a teacher; it was my dream job. Due to some circumstances, I was left with no choice but to follow someone elses dream for me. Maybe that's the reason why I've always enjoyed teaching Milly. Now I know I can fulfill my greatest dream and that is to be the best teacher to my daughter. ❤️ Thanks Milly for reliving my dream and turning it in to reality. You really are my dream come true.

The best teacher to my daughter

I loved and enjoyed schooling - actually i was part of the “habituated” students who’d rather stay at home to do home works and review her notes. Now that we have a daughter, we would like to instill the same “passion” and enjoyment with studying.

We’re going to take a big leap to go against the social’s norm. We want to take charge of our daughter’s education and make sure that she learns things the best way possible. Few months ago, before our daughter turned 8 months, my husband and I discussed into home schooling her. I know a lot of parents are still curious about the pros and cons of homeschooling, but based on the articles I’ve read and moms I’ve talked to, I know deep in my heart that homeschooling is just for us. This is my calling, our calling and I’m looking forward to take that challenge.

So what really compelled us to homeschool our daughter in the next few months?

·         Own curriculum - there are a lot of available curriculum available and you can choose your own schedule that works best for you and your child
·         Bonding - being our child’s teacher is a great bonding. #attachmentparenting at its finest! J
·         Teaching method - we can adapt the teaching method that suits best to our daughter
·         Shelter our daughter from violence and bullies in school
·         Flexible study hours
·         We’d be able to monitor her studies
·         To be closer to God

Right now, there are homeschool providers that are accredited by DepEd. You may check the list for accredited providers http://hapihomeschooler.com/about-hapi/hapi-members-affiliates/.

My husband and I are eyeing for these providers: CFA (Catholic Filipino Academy) www.catholicfilipinoacademy.com founded by Bo Sanchez; International British Academy www.iba.edu.ph , Kids World Integrated in Greenhills and Homeschool of Asia and Pacific in Madrigal Alabang.  We might enroll her as soon as she turns 3 years and we’d home school her spontaneously as soon as she turns 1 year old. Call me OC, but I’ve saved tons of references online and activities to prepare for my daughter.

If you’re curious about homeschooling, these links may be helpful for you.

We’re already eyeing for CFA and their program is really interesting.  Once you enroll your child to their homeschool program, you can have access to curriculum and materials. You can even let your kid join a full blown orchestra and there will be weekly activities so you don’t have to worry about their social skills. Just like any other schools, field trips and moving up day is also available. More details here: http://catholicfilipinoacademy.com/exciting-news-from-cfas-preschool-department/

If you want to teach your child, there is no such thing as “Too Early”. That’s why as early as now, I always allot time for our tiny tot study time. Every day, just before her morning siesta, I make sure to let her read some books, and at the same time teach her the “basics”. Take a look at the video below, this is my daughter during her study time. (best when played with sound) ♥

Homeschooling isn’t easy and MAY not work for every one. A lot of patience is required, time management is important and there will be some things that you really need to give up. Of course, prayer is needed too. You need to ask for God's guidance to help you all throughout the process. Home schooling may mean, one income household, and since I want to focus on my child’s education, I am looking into leaving my job temporarily (which I’m still thinking over and over again).  For as long as I can manage my time, and can juggle working and teaching, I will do my best to be the best teacher to my daughter.

PS: Let me know if you need the rates of the schools mentioned above. ☻

Every day is Mother's Day

Long days, sleepless nights, endless cries and puffy eyes. Giggles and chuckles, laughter and joys, smiles and frowns of my happy little one.

That pretty sums up my life every single day. I will never get tired of “feeling tired” as long as I can give what my baby needs.  I will sacrifice everything just to make her happy and promise to be the best mom I can be. I will love her more than the stars, until infinity and beyond.

Few days from now, we’re about to celebrate Mother’s Day. (At the back of my mind, I like to appeal that every day should be Mother’s Day; that we should be thanking and celebrating life with them every day. ) It’s going to be my first Mother’s day and for first timer moms like me, the ordinary day every 2nd  Sunday of May unexpectedly turned in to something special. Right this very moment, I still couldn’t believe that I have this beautiful daughter who adores and appreciates me. My dream of becoming a mom has turned in to reality.  How can I not dream about being a mom? This is actually the best thing that has ever happened to me. It made me a better person and after I gave birth to a lovely daughter, it’s like all the stars have aligned and all my questions in life have been answered.  I will forever be thankful to God for this blessing and letting me experience this bliss.

To all the moms out there, flabby tummies, messy hair, battle scars, stretch marks, eye bags -  these are just some of the few things that we are made of. Whenever long days and endless nights seem like infinity, just take a look at your beautiful living miracle and everything will be fine. One day, all of our hardships on being a mom will pay off. Seize every moment, enjoy the time while  you can still squeeze your children and hug them tight. Continue looking in to their eyes and showering them with smooches. Remember, these kind of moments will turn in to memories, because one day, you’ll be surprised, that the little bean you have pampered from months to early years of childhood, no longer wants to be kissed and touched.

Kudos to all of us. We are doing a great job. Cheers!

PS: To my mom in heaven, I know you are watching over us. Thank you. I will never be a great mom, if not for you. I never understood the depth of your love for me until I became a mom.

Feeding your baby the healthier way

Start them young.

I remember my mom used to tell me that instead of eating Cerelac, I’d rather munch on string beans. I am a big fan of vegetables that is why I also want my daughter to savor eating veggies too.

All babies can handle interesting foods before the age of 1 that’s why as early as now, I am teaching my daughter to eat vegetables so by the time she has mastered the art-of-eating, I wouldn’t have a hard time feeding her.

This is also the reason why I decided to make her baby food. I feel more confident and safer if I am the one who prepares her food. (plus its cheaper) As much as possible, I do not want to give her ready-made rice cereals and jarred baby foods. These types of foods are really sweet because of its high sugar content and since diabetes runs in our family, I’d rather be on the safe side.  I am also afraid of its long term effects. Just like Gerber. Most moms I’ve talked to are telling me that babies who grew up eating Gerber tend to be picky eaters. (Is it true that these jarred foods do not have preservatives? If a fresh baby food only lasts 3 days in the fridge and 1 month in the freezer, how come these jarred baby foods has an expiration date of almost 2 years?) I am not against ready-made and jarred baby foods, and to tell you honestly, I almost resorted to giving her these type of foods because there are times I am already running out of ideas what menu to prepare for her (plus pagod from work). Actually, I have one box of Cerelac readily available just in case I won’t be able to make her own meal. So far, the box is left untouched and has been sitting in the pantry for 2 months already. :D

I go to the market every day to buy fresh vegetables that I can steam, boil or puree. And now that she enjoys munching on vegetables or any food that has more-texture, preparing her meals is now easier because I don't have to puree veggies and fruits all the time. I feel very proud of myself because I've been making her own food for 3 months already and I know that I am doing the right thing.

The other day, I experimented to check if she'd choose veggies over cookies. I placed 2 Bibibons cookies and sayote sticks on her table and guess what - she chose the vegetables. (Way to go baby). She was able to finish 1 whole of sayote in one sitting while she barely touched the cookies. Actually she just tried to nibble then threw it on the floor. hehe.  I just hope that she will have the same appetite with vegetables as she grows up.

Here's a pic of my baby enjoying her okra for yesterday's breakfast. Aside from Okra, she also ate Pureed Bananacado with brown rice. haha

For recipes, you can check my other blog at: Mommy Katrina Cooks

This is a good guide for parents who are wondering what to feed their babies. This is more of a helpful rule of thumb and not a law, meaning you can give foods earlier or later as long as you make sure your baby can handle what you feed them. Not all babies are created equal and there are some babies who can handle foods better at an earlier age, while others need more time to get the hang of it. Just like Milly, I started giving her Potato & Pasta as early as 6 months.

Again, its just fine to give Cerelac, baby cereals or any commercialized baby food you see in the market. You know what's best for them, and as long as your baby is healthy and doesn't have any allergic reaction to any food you give him/her, then you're on the right track. But if you have the time to prepare their own meals, go ahead. It's fun and fulfilling. Remember, mommies make the best food ever. ;)

Homemade Brown Rice Cereal with Apples and Bananas

I feel so proud of myself because I was able to make Milly’s first very own Brown Rice Cereal with Apples and Bananas. It may not seem very much but I just love making homemade food for Milly; it just gives me so much joy. My eyes would totally light up every time I see her enjoy every meal I prepare for her. I just want her to be hale and hearty and this is my way of introducing that to her.

The other day, I tried my luck to prepare her very first homemade cereal. To be honest, I wasn’t really that confident while I started grinding the brown rice. I got really cautious because I didn’t want to waste any ingredients every time I prepare Milly’s meal.  As I started grinding the brown rice and saw them turn into small pieces, I knew right there and then that I was doing the right thing. Remember, brown rice takes a while before it gets cooked.  Boiling water and continuously stirring the rice will do the trick. (Took me about 10-15 minutes before I got the right texture)

Here’s what you need:
·         A food processor with miller/grinder (not sure if blender can do this though)
·         4-5 tablespoons of brown rice
·         2 medium bananas
·         1 apple
·         1 cup water (or more)
·         ½ cup water (for puree)

What you need to do:

·         Grind the brown rice. Set aside.

·         Pour the water on the pot. Add the brown rice. Let it boil. Continue stirring. You will notice that the texture will get sticky. You will have to add more water because we do not want to “burn” the brown rice. Gradually pour water while checking if the rice is already cooked. (I did 6-8 taste tests to make sure if the rice is already soft). Once cooked, set aside.

·         Now, steam the apple.

·         Combine the bananas and steamed apple in the food processor.

·         Gradually pour ½ cup of water. Puree until you get the right consistency.

·         Mix the brown rice cereal with the banapple puree. Puree for another minute.

·         Serve and let your baby enjoy your homemade baby food!

Taste level: 5 stars J

Mommy "KAT-fessions"

Before I became a mom, I always say things that I wouldn't do once I become a mother. Things that I would and would not do and some bunch  stuff. Sometimes, I like to think that becoming a parent makes your brain cells act pretty weird and all the things you've said before are suddenly - Poof, Gone.  You go to the hospital pretty intelligent equipped with all the ideas and advises you've researched prior to giving birth. But as soon as you see your little one right there in your arms looking back at your face, everything would change. Turns out you really aren't smart at all. Being a parent is really not easy. There is no reviewer or a book that you can read that explains much about parenting.

So today, I’d like to share what motherhood did to me :D Most of my realizations are on the positive side, but here are some confessions that I'd like to spill.

·         I never liked ME time way back, but as soon as I had my daughter, I've always wanted some time alone for myself, not with my daughter, not with my husband. Just me. My me time right now is whenever I say I am going to poop while I bring my phone with me in the rest room.

·         Sometimes, but not all the time, I use my daughter to excuse myself from getting out of social obligations.

·         I easily get distracted whenever I have my phone with me. While I lull my daughter to sleep on my right arm, I have my phone with me on my left hand. Facebooking.

·         I hope my boss do not see this, but sometimes I call in sick just to be with my daughter and to recharge my body due to lack of sleep :D

·         I.Do.Not.Save - as in I buy lots of unnecessary stuff for my daughter without my husband even knowing it. I always ask the seller to ship the package here at my office so he wouldn't know that I have new items for my daughter.

·         I am unable to keep up with the mess.

·         Before I had Milly, I’ve always disliked moms who keep on posting pictures of their babies, but I am guilty as charged, I am already part of that club.

·         I sometimes blame myself for not getting enough sleep because I stay up and stare at my Facebook newsfeed.

·         Yep, I use iPad as her baby sitter.  (Well, but not most of the time)

·         I always C-H-E-A-T. Not the third party cheat kind of thing. I always get cheat days. I always tell myself that I am on a strict diet, but everyday is like a cheat day for me. (And now I am wondering why I still have  this extra flappy belly)

·         I feel proud of my  our genes. Didn't know that my husband and I have a good combination. In my own world, my daughter is the MOST BEAUTIFUL. :)

It has only been 8 months and I am pretty sure that my list will be updated every now and then. Wait until Milly becomes a toddler.

How about you mommas? Do you have any confessions to share? ☻

Changes for the past 5 months

My baby and I are already 22 weeks, and just last week, I started to feel constant flutters and twitches on my baby bump. I suppose that’s my baby moving inside me, because those movements are really “not that familiar” to me and I am 100% sure that I didn’t experience these movements when I was not yet pregnant.

A lot of things have changed already since I got pregnant. Most of my pre-pregnancy clothes wouldn’t fit me anymore, and a lot of my loose pullovers that I thought I could use all throughout my pregnancy journey are already body-hugging. I’m only relying to the number of dresses I bought a couple of weeks ago. I’ve managed to buy 8 dresses, and since last month, I’ve been wearing these dresses every time I go to work. I no longer care if some people would think I do not have enough clothes, but I just can’t buy too many dresses right now – most especially that I want to save my allowance for my baby. Besides, what’s important these days in my situation is comfort and my baby. Style/fashion is the last thing I’d want to think of right now:D (Though I can still manage to wear some nifty lipsticks and blushers and iron my hair, just so I wouldn’t look like a total mess)
5 months have passed since I got pregnant, and here are some of the major changes I’ve noticed in my body.

·         I’ve gained 10 kilos already; and I’ve faced the reality that I’m going to gain more. I still have 4 months to go, and my bump would be bigger.

·         My baby bump is already noticeable. You can never think of it as a part of love handles, because of its prominent round shape.

·         My bra size? Well it’s already size 43!!! I used to be 38. This is the only thing that I wished that would stay forever even after I give birth. Hehe!

·         My feet size, from size 7 to size 9. My feet got really fat.

·         I can’t even wear my wedding ring. It’s as if the veins would pop out every time I try to fit it in.

·         My waistline, which I’ve been maintaining for quite some time already, had bumped up to 38 inches. I used to be size 28.

·         Those surreal light fluttery movements that I feel every now and then (BEST.FEELING!)

I still have four months to go – four months to cherish and enjoy the major changes that are happening to my body. Even if sometimes, I feel anxious about the way I look and the weight I’ve gained, I’m still thankful because I wouldn’t experience these changes if I were not pregnant.

Errrp, just wanted to share this mapagpanggap pic. I'm really not sporty/athletic. I just wanted to try if I can play table tennis. hehe

Halfway there

My baby and I just turned 20 weeks yesterday, and based on the app I have installed on my iPad, it says that we're already halfway there. Time flies so fast and I couldn't imagine that in a few months, I'd be able to see my precious little one.

Well hello there our lil one!
Last Feb 14, -- yep Valentines day, I went back to my OB to have my monthly check up. I was scheduled to come back to her on the 15th, but since I've been suffering from backache and some slight cramps; which she suspected as UTI, she advised me to visit her clinic so she could check my urine and do a quick scan on my baby bump.

My urinalysis results came out perfectly okay, but I was advised to drink plenty of fluid. She also told me that I ought to get some good pillow to support my back most especially during work hours. She also did a quick scan on my baby, and she said that Mark and I are having a baby girl! But since ultrasounds are not always right, hubby and I will go back next month to have my gender scan again. ♥ Aside from the "emergency" ultrasound we had which turned out perfectly okay, she also vaccinated me with Tetanus Toxoid & Hepa B.

They say that as soon as the baby in our tummy turns 20 weeks, we'd be able to feel his/her kicks already. I don't know, but in my case, I haven't felt the intense kicks yet. Though once in a while, I've been having this fluttery feeling inside my stomach and slight twitches - and I'm pretty sure that's my baby moving inside me. I just couldn't wait to experience how exactly a kick and somersault feels like. ♥

4 months and counting

Well hello there! It’s been quite a while since the last time I’ve updated this blog, and a lot of things have changed pretty much lately. I’m now on my 17 weeks of pregnancy, and I’m so thankful that my baby and I were able to surpass first trimester with no hitches (that much). Morning sickness is finally over, and my APPETITE is now on its full blast. Let’s say, I eat much like of a “kargador” who couldn’t resist two to three cups of rice; and believe me or not, I wasn’t like this before. I could skip meals and can survive by eating bread alone. But this time? I’d go rage and my stomach would rumble if I can’t eat every 4 hours. LOL. Now, that explains the extra kilos I’ve gained for the past few months. Nevertheless, I am enjoying every step of my pregnancy journey, and I love everything that is happening to my body.

Well, according to my OB, my weight gain (to be exact is 5kilos) is pretty normal for my size, but according to my good-ol-friends, I still look kind of the same, except with the excess chin and more prominent chubby cheeks. Hehe!

Aside from my body changes; like my uterus has grown larger, a lot of things had happened while I entered this phase of my pregnancy. My beloved husband and I went into a firm discussion to change OB due to practical reasons. I had to go to 4 different OB’s, and checked if they would suit my preferences and budget, but in the end I still decided to stick with my original and super concern OB. Would you believe that she would text me every now and then to keep me posted about our upcoming appointments? Who does that, really? Some OB’s wouldn’t even care if you don’t come back to them for your regular check-ups.  Some wouldn’t even bother giving out their mobile phone numbers and would just tell you to text their assistant if you have questions. (Seriously?) Oh well, OB’s job can be very demanding, and they could not reply to every text messages and inquiries you send them, but that’s why I love about my current OB. She takes care of me so much and my baby, and would reply to my text messages even at wee hours.

So to all the mommies to be out there, it’s very important to find an OB whom you’re comfortable to work with. Look for someone who’s friendly to take care of you and to be concerned about your position, and professional enough to answer all your questions. Someone who doesn’t make you feel scared and anxious about pregnancy, and makes you realize that pregnancy is such an enjoyable journey. . . And someone who doesn’t make any insensitive comments about the changes in your body J

And oh, before I forget, here’s a snapshot of how I look like with a maternity dress. My baby bump is more prominent on a side view :D

Almost done with First Trimester

Weee! I'm almost done with 1st trimester - thank you Lord for protecting me and keeping me safe from harm. I'm so thankful because my pregnancy is not that "maselan" at all - and I am not experiencing any pain or bleeding even if I have to brave the traffic and MRT crowd everyday.
2-hour travel going to work is no joke, most especially during the first trimester, and I am one of the lucky pregnant women who don't have to stay at home and have a bed rest all throughout their pregnancy. (Well, I hope that time wouldn't come, and may the Lord continue to guide me every day)

The other day, I was reminiscing the time when my husband and I were still trying to conceive our baby. I had to undergo the process of raspa/d&c just to get pregnant. (hhm, it really makes me cringe every time I remember how they gave me the anesthesia)

Ang Panginoon nga naman, He had to delay our prayers just so we could realize the real meaning of patience and understanding and  to hold on at times when you feel like giving up. Who would have thought that month we finally conceived is the exact month I stopped taking medications. Thank you Again, Lord!

So far, I have already gained 1Kilo, and I think my baby bump is already starting to show. It's getting bigger each day and so am I. ♥

TADA!

Taken last April 2013 at Las Pinas Doctors Hospital
That's me, right after I have recovered from the operation. The nurses told me that my pain tolerance is a bit high because I was able to stand up to take a pee after the operation. Well to be honest, I was really scared to take a pee because I thought it would really hurt, but I think the anesthesia really saved me from not experiencing any pain after the operation, though I got really scared when I saw A LOT OF BLOOD after I pee'd (sorry too much information!) ♥

Christmas Time is Here ♥

Weee! Christmas is just around the corner, but a major boo-boo for me because I wouldn’t be able to eat Noche Buena with my family and go to simbang gabi with them since I have work on Christmas Eve. Sigh, the downside of working on a BPO.

And since most of my close friends are spending their most sought holiday of the year in the office, we planned to celebrate it here instead by bringing our potluck. I just hope next Christmas, (by that time, I already have a 5-month old baby), I’d be able to take my vacation leave already and spend it with my love ones.

Christmas spirit is very much present in the office as well. Theme for the year is recycled stuff, and surprisingly, a lot of creative juices have been flowing per team and I must say that their decorations are really splendid. As per our team, I think we have the simplest design of all. Hehe! Good thing a friend of mine had volunteered to stick some paper lanterns just so we could have a simple decoration on our aisle. If not for him, we wouldn’t have any single design hanging on the pipes (yes, pipes!, pipes are so visible here on our office). Hirap nga naman if some of your team mates are so unhelpful and wouldn’t even bother asking if we need some help sticking these designs. Hehehe! Peace! :D

I wanted to take and document the creative decorations here in the office, but since most of the people here work at night (and I’m that shy to ask if I can take pictures of their designs), I opted to take a pic of my most favorite embellishment and creativity they’ve done on their work stations. It’s so unique, and WAY different among the rest. Not the typical lantern/stars you stick on the ceiling, or the wrapped gifts you display under the Christmas tree. They made a gingerbread house (wait is it really a ginger bread house?) out of boxes and Manila paper. How cool is that? J

See for yourself. It’s really cute!

And oh - well before I forget, since this is a pregnancy blog, here's my tummy at 11 weeks. hehehe! ♥

tummy's getting bigger! yay!

Now at 10 weeks

Happy December! Since my dear husband and I have already received one of the best gifts God has given us, I simply couldn’t ask for more this Christmas season. A lot of things have changed already since the time we found out I am pregnant. My attitude and perspective towards life; my relationship with my husband even got better and the way I look, physically. Hehe! Well, nothing much has changed in terms of my physical appearance yet, and I couldn’t wait to see the baby bump in my tummy. So as early as now, I am going to document my baby tummy look to see how it progresses week by week.

To top it off, I am already 10 weeks pregnant, and a tiny bump is already showing. I don’t know if this is because the way how I eat a lately (I MEAN, I EAT A LOT LATELY. THANK YOU BECAUSE I’VE ALREADY OVERCOME THE DREADFUL MORNING SICKNESS), but every time I look at my “puson” which is already big before, I couldn’t help but smile because my puson looks more firm these days and more round.

This is what my tummy looks like at 10 weeks. ♥

Thanks to my husband for taking this picture.

My husband has shaky hands and he ended up taking too many blurred pics (20 plus pics akk!). This is the best shot he could offer. I had to filter the above pic because my eyes looks so deformed on the original pic because of his uber pasmadong plus nanginginig na kamay. hehehe!
